Traces

This work investigates how our belongings become physically and emotionally saturated with memories.

Clothing is particularly personal because of the way that it relates so closely to the body. Garments physically gather memories of a person’s experiences through staining, fraying and becoming worn. In this way, remnants of past events become a part of our possessions. They can tell stories of the past.

Inspired by sleeve forms, layered fragments of porcelain cast from textiles are assembled into abstracted sculptures. The viewer’s attention is drawn to the lively colours of the inside, the energetic memory contained within the garment. The more subtle textures and details gradually come into focus, much like the way that hazy memories can become clearer through recollection. The ways that the forms and colours are arranged refer to aspects of memory recollection.
